What Are the Lap Band Surgery Risks?

Lap band surgery is a weight loss procedure regularly performed in the U.S. and more affordable in Mexico.  The surgery is normally accomplished using a laparoscopic technique, in which miniaturized surgical instruments are inserted through small incisions.

However, at the surgeon’s discretion, the procedure may be converted to an open procedure that requires a large incision.  The lap band surgery risks include the risks that exist for all surgeries and a few that are specific to the lap band procedure.

On the standard side, it is possible that the patient will have adverse reaction to the anesthesia either during or after the procedure.  An infection may develop after surgery at the incision site or sites, which can be difficult to treat as hospitals can be home to antibiotic resistant bacteria strains.  Bleeding occurs after some procedures.

On the exclusive side, lap band device itself may slip over time.  This can result in the pouch formed by the device becoming larger.  In some cases, the inflatable band in the device may deflate.

This may be the result of mechanical error or the device degrading.  In the event of slippage or mechanical failure, it typically requires a second procedure to adjust, remove or replace the device.
